Softbank Corp, founded in 1981 by Masayoshi Son in Japan , went IPO in Japan Stock market in 1994. Softbank mainly focuses its investment on Internet and Telecommunications. With investing over 600 portfolio companies worldwide and holding major shares of over 300 companies including Yahoo !, Etrade, eloan, Verisign, ZDnet, Softbank's 2003 revenue exceeded 400 billion Japanese yen.

SOFTBANK CORP. announced to acquire JAPAN TELECOM CO., LTD in May 2004. JAPAN TELECOM is a fixed-line operator and an affiliate of Ripplewood Holdings L.L.C. As a result of the acquisition, the SOFTBANK Group will have consolidated sales of around 1 trillion yen and control approximately 10 million access lines, thus becoming a leading global telecommunication operator.

The SOFTBANK Group will substantially expand the scale of its business through the acquisition of JAPAN TELECOM and will seek to become "the No.1 broadband company", offering a comprehensive range of communication services including voice, data transmission and internet connectivity to consumer and enterprise customers.
